Torn (Part 2 – The Tearing Accelerates)

The tearing accelerates in

Adolescence and adulthood

As we discard our innocence,

Days of long little league games

Of recess and playmates

And lazy bike rides

Are relegated to the dwindling rivers of memory,

Replaced by commitments and committees

By all manner of minutia

Tearing our spontaneous spirits–

Leaving moments and memories,

Shards of our shared illusions

Strewn on on the threshing floor

In middle age we are split

By the slashing and scratching

Of marriage and children

Fumbling our way

Through forays

Of pointless arguments

Laced with insidious invectives

We simultaneously relish and regret;

In consoling and compromise

We cut our egos and ambitions asunder

Letting them float into the ether

Like a cloud of soft and hazy promises . . .

tearing

This is the second segment of a lengthy poem titled “Torn.”
