Ghosts

Some ghosts never leave…

You have poisoned your oceans and polluted your minds

you have feasted on blood and gore,

made diabolical machines from monstrous dreams,

and turned your brother to war

With one push of a button

you’ll be permanently shut-in,

a radioactive room for a tomb

And yet you laugh,

while the atom bomb recedes

But never disappears

locked inside yourself

insulated from your fears

from the ghosts

The laughing…is over

the magical mystery tour is winding down

the soft parade is nothing but a whisper

and Hiroshima’s and Nagasaki’s ghosts

have come to take their place among the living . . .

Charles Bukowski, the Los Angeles beat poet that captured the depravity of American urban life once said, “There is something about writing poetry that brings a man close to the cliff’s edge.” Newsweed is proud to stand in solidarity and offer you a chance to get close to the cliff’s edge with our first Power of Poetry Contest.
